Becoming an Adult with A Life-Changing Military Experience

Daily writing prompt
What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?

The time I remember the most happened in March 1964, a month that forever changed the course of my life. I received this unexpected letter, which felt heavy in my hands as I opened it, and it stated, “your friends and neighbors have selected you to become a member of The United States Army. I WAS DRAFTED!” Emotions surged through me as I read those words; a mix of pride, fear, and uncertainty flooded my mind. I could hardly fathom how the decisions of those around me could have such a profound impact on my future. The reality began to sink in that I was about to embark on a journey that would test my character, challenge my ideals, and shape my identity in ways I had yet to comprehend.

The next two years I spent time in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where I trained rigorously with fellow soldiers, honing my skills in various military exercises that would prepare us for the challenges ahead. Following that, I moved to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, a place known for its intense training programs and hot desert climate, which tested our resilience and adaptability. My journey then took me to Europe, where I had the opportunity to serve in Nuremberg and Darmstadt, Germany, experiencing the rich history and culture while working alongside international troops. Throughout this time, I was grateful that I did not have to go to Vietnam, as many of my peers did; instead, I focused on building valuable skills and relationships that would shape my military career.

This was a good experience though and do not regret it at all.
