The one thing I did that I never thought I would do was outlive my parents. Both of my parents passed on when they were seventy-five—first my mother, and three years later, my father. For most of my life, I carried this quiet belief that I would follow the same pattern, as if there were an invisible line drawn at seventy-five that I, too, would eventually cross. I planned my expectations around it, and in some ways, I even made peace with the idea.

However, here I am, well over eighty, waking up each day to a life I once assumed I would never see. That old family legacy is no longer on my mind in the same way; instead, I find myself thinking about what it means to be given this extra time. I feel a mix of gratitude and surprise, along with a gentle sadness that my parents never had these extra years. Their absence is still with me, but so is a growing sense of responsibility to use this time well—to notice the small moments, to remember them often, and to honor their memory by living as fully as I can for as long as I am here.
